How often should my player train outside of club?

For most club players, one or two extra sessions a week on days with no team practice is a good place to start, with at least one full rest day. More isn’t always better.

Working around the club week

Most club teams practice Tuesday and Thursday, and games often land on weekends. That’s why our busiest training days are Monday and Wednesday, with Friday and Saturday as extras. We don’t train on Sundays.

Rest is part of training

The American Academy of Pediatrics advises that kids shouldn’t be required to train or play more than 5–6 days a week, should take 2–3 months off from a given sport each year, and shouldn’t raise weekly training load by more than 10–20% at a time. If your player has club twice a week plus a game, one or two BEST sessions keeps them inside that range.

Signs to ease off

Talk to your doctor about pain that doesn’t go away.

  • Persistent soreness or pain
  • Dropping motivation
  • Poorer sleep or schoolwork
  • The same nagging injury coming back

Consistency beats volume

One session every week for a season does more than four sessions in a week followed by a month off. That’s why monthly plans exist.
