10 and under
Players aged 10 and younger should not head the ball in practice or games. In games that follow the rule, a deliberate header by a player in these age groups results in an indirect free kick to the other team.
11 to 13
Players aged 11 to 13 may head the ball in games. In practice, heading is limited to 30 minutes a week, with no more than 15 to 20 headers per player per week.
Check your league
Leagues and clubs adopt the guidance in their own rules, and details can differ. Ask your club or league which version applies to your player’s team.
What it means for training
For younger players, the time is better spent on first touch, passing, dribbling and finishing with the feet. When heading is introduced, it should be taught with correct technique and low repetitions.
If a head injury is suspected
Remove the player from play and have them checked by a medical professional before they return. When in doubt, sit them out. This guide is general information, not medical advice.
